Skin Care Products: Be As Concerned With What You Put ON Your Body As You Are With What You Put IN Your Body
Q: What do you use for skin care products?
A: I’m as concerned with what I put ON my body as I am with what I put IN my body. I buy only products that are free of phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, and parabens. As with food, I buy organic whenever possible. I look for cruelty free on the label, and not just because I’m vegan. My philosophy is that the reason companies need to do animal testing is because they are using harmful ingredients and they need to find out just how much damage they’ll do. The testing isn’t even assurance that the products are safe. There are many ingredients that have been banned in other countries and are still sold here in the U.S., which means they were tested and approved even though they are dangerous.
Here are the products I use daily:
- I make my own shower gel, foaming hand soap, and foaming face wash with Dr. Bronner’s Unscented Liquid Castile Soap.
- Almond Oil is so versatile: I use it as an in-shower moisturizer, for shaving, and to remove waterproof mascara.
- One of my clients turned me on to Thayers Lavender Witch Hazel Alcohol-Free Toner.
- I moisturize my face with Tamanu Oil.
- For sunscreen, I use Yes to Carrots Fragrance-Free Daily Moisturizer with SPF 15.
- For hand and body lotion, I use Kiss My Face Vitamin A & E Lotion.
- For really dry skin, like elbows and knees, I’m so happy I found Mountain Rose Herbs’ Powerful Skin Compound.
- I like shea butter on my lips because it’s not greasy. I use it straight or mixed with coconut oil.
- Rose Hip Oil is great on scars.
- In my gym bag, I carry Shea Moisture African Black Soap Clarifying Facial Wipes.
- I love Shikai Natural Tea Tree Shampoo and Conditioner. The tea tree and peppermint feels refreshing and it smells amazing!
I make my own toothpaste, deodorant, dry shampoo, and more. Check out those recipes here.
