Strength is your ability to overcome an external force.
If that isn’t a life skill, I don’t know what is!
You build strength in the gym by overcoming an external force. That external force can come from gravity and body weight (think push-ups or TRX Rows), resistance bands, or weights.
The ACSM recommends strength training 2-3 days/week.
